Creating a Luxurious Backyard Poolscape: An Insider View

Custom gunite pool and spa installation on a wooded lot in St. Charles, Illinois.

If you looked around your neighborhood the past couple of unseasonably warm weekends, you likely saw plenty of activity – kids riding bikes to the park, people out walking their dogs, and neighbors starting to clean up their garden beds. Here at Montano’s Landscaping, we have had a front row view for the preparation for a backyard oasis in St. Charles, IL that has been in the works since May of last year.

One of the many benefits of selecting Montano’s for your landscaping design and construction project is that we have incredible partnerships with outstanding companies, such as one of the area’s top pool designers and installers, Premier Pools & Spas. By working together with Premier, we are able to seamlessly plan and implement complex projects and help homeowners enjoy their new spaces faster.

Thanks to the ground thawing earlier than normal, the Premier team was able to excavate and prep for the installation of a custom gunite pool – the pièce de résistance of this multifaceted project on a breathtaking wooded lot in St. Charles. We’re excited to take you along with us throughout the process of creating the backyard oasis of this homeowner’s dreams.

First things first – let’s talk about the pool.

The Biggest Advantage of a Gunite Pool - Customization

Frame for custom gunite pool in Chicago western suburbs

When Premier discussed pool material options with the family, gunite was the clear winner. Selecting a pool material in the Midwest requires consideration of a variety of factors. For homeowners and design/build teams alike, everything starts with the design and overall goals.

As compared to fiberglass pools, gunite offers a great deal of flexibility. Since it is not pre-fabricated, you are able to determine how big you want your pool to be and where you want it located, not to mention ensuring a seamlessly flow with existing landscape architecture. That was important for this family – they have mature trees they wanted to retain. By designing a gunite pool, Premier was able to create the exact pool shape and location that worked best for their yard.

Natural Stone - and Lots of It

Part of creating a cohesive landscape design is congruency. Since the home rests on a bucolic, wooded lot, natural stone was a must for the pool patio. We’re not talking a lazy stone walking path, either – we’re talking three semi-trucks full of natural stone being delivered to create the epitome of a backyard oasis.

An Outdoor Kitchen to Complete the Functional Design

The final component to the overall landscape design for these homeowners is an outdoor kitchen. Because, after all, who wants to go inside to cook when the party’s outside?

When we first start talking with a homeowner about their project, function is one of the first things we discuss. In this case, the pool and pool patio would have been beautiful on their own. But when looking at how the pool will be used – for the family to enjoy together on hot summer days and hosting gatherings for friends and extended family – being able to grill burgers and brats while still enjoying time with loved ones was key.
